The industry is very popular in Japan and I think it’s mainstream. Gravure idols are actually very desirable and respected, and even looked up to by many people as goddesses . Gravure idols are not porn stars as they don’t do nudity, but I think those videos are kind of what you call softcore films. Since pornography is legal in Japan and the Japanese anime/manga industry is so huge, idols may even have good reputations. Even in China where porn is banned, Japanese idols are respected in the Chinese media. But still, I could be wrong, that’s just the impression it gave me.
